When Things Dont Go as Planned Funny Stories
When Things Don't Go as Planned
Today was supposed to be a day like any other. I got up a bit late, and that's when things started hitting the proverbial fan.
It sucks. You've gotten down your morning routine — meditation, affirmations, visualization.. exercise, reading, writing.. Life was going so well. But I guess that's the perfect time to throw you for a loop.
Now I'm behind on calls I need to make, things I need to get done, on and on. Trapped in a real life game of Tetris it doesn't help to hear dramas around you that have nothing to do with you.. or do they?
Sometimes I feel when we pay attention, the universe does play dice — event unfold around us like a toss of I Ching joss sticks to tell us the deeper meaning of our lives.
I like to say that we can make plans, but life is what happens between our plans.
Years ago I had my life mapped out after high school. After earning my aerospace engineering degree and serving a distinguished career as a navy test pilot, I'd launch my career as an astronaut and settle down with my wife and 2.5 kids.
Life had other plans.
Well, since that didn't work I decided that I'd earn my MBA in IT management, move to the SF Bay Area, and make my fortune with a dotcom startup.
Life had other plans.
Instead I ended up dancing tango and writing. Somehow I ended up working on dozens of television shows. (Sorry, dad, I didn't end up in med school but I do play a doctor.) I met and connected with artists. They shared their stories.
Now at this point this is where we normally go to the part about how I found my religion and discovered my purpose working with Indie Creatives.
But, of course, that's not how it works. Even if the Hollywood version of my story ends up with a tight set of plot twists and nice buildup of tension, here's the real story.
I still kept trying to make plans..
Spending hundreds, even thousands, on courses for internet marketing, coaching programs.. real estate investment.. I was determined to map out my destiny. I know better than life where I should go, right?
That's the funny thing about life. You can twist and turn, but your sails can only catch the wind in so many ways to really move.
When I look back at some of the best times in my life — that time in Berlin.. the holiday in Nijmegen.. the festival in Portland.. people I've met and loved.. meals shared.. laughter and memorable times — most of these I never imagined.
Sure, it takes some planning to book a flight to Europe. And some of my most disastrous moments when I got stuck without a ride and ended up sleeping in the airport were due to a lack of planning.
If you plan an event or something like making a film and work with a happy crew, you better do some planning, or they will quickly turn into a mutinous bunch of artists.
As I've pointed out before, light is funny. It behaves as either particle or wave — depending on how you observe it. That's how I feel our lives are. Sometimes we're individual particles bouncing around — seemingly at random.
Other times we're part of a bigger cosmic tidal wave that is moving us towards some unknown shore. And yet the funny thing is that we can affect all this — merely by how we choose to see it.
My friend Mark and I used to go around and around in this debate on whether we really have free choice or our fate was predestined. I think I have some idea of the answer for me.. what about you?
